ONE FELL SWOOP - Sounds Like Drugs

The boys are back again ,this time for drugs! Another fab guitar freak-out number ,
"Breakfast Claw Butter Horn" ,showing off Chipmonk's prowess on the axe. All 3 "College Rock Hits" ,are included here (Cares Are Oceans Away , Mushrooms , Goils) ,as well as other psych/indie/alt-rock numbers. A covers medley at the end ,runs thru hits by , The Angry Samoans , Johnny Cash , Black Flag , and Sonic Youth. With titles like "(Thank You ,And Enjoy) Music To Hit Bongs By" and "More Planetarium Music" , you should be able to surmise what to expect. Great drug-rock ,from The FTM underground! Recorded 9/28/1991. The album title is a prime example of truth in advertising!

SUPERCHUNK - Mower

3 song e.p. from the pride of Chapel Hill ,NC , and one of the finest indie alt-rock bands to come out of the scene. I defy you to listen to the song "Mower" ,and not get it stuck in your head! Their tune ,"Slack Motherfucker" (not on this disc!),defined generation x. Thanks to Joel ,who gave me this from his collection! "It was a robin's egg ,and it was blue!"

ONE FELL SWOOP - Swoopin' Time !

It was 20 years ago on this day ,that Ed , Joel ,& Chipmonk recorded this tape , 9/26/1991 ,at Cat Machine house. There is a cover of "Black Betty" ,mixed into the 3 part finale ,"Swoop And Ska". Also a true story about a "Bogus Bomb" ,that was placed on the Cape Coral bridge ,at the time. And of course ,more of their trademark indie/diy/college rock sound ,that they were known for. Some down-east dialogue slips into the first track ,"Tie The Dog Loose,Jake" ,and the tune "Body Distortion" ,has some cool intercut samples during the playing of the song!
9 tracks ,in slightly over an hour, that slide down easy ,like that first cuppa java in the a.m.These guys were, and still are, cool beyond compare!

GOD'S FAVORITE BAND - 666 Point System To Destroy The Egg - Best Of GFB

Yes ,before everyone starts inquiring , this is one of my favorite bands. Sounding as if they (they being: Ogre Snot Gurgle , Jesus Phreak , Fried Chickum and several guests) were raised on a strict diet of Sockeye and other Wheelchair bands ,booze and drugs ,and fried food ,this is a masterpiece! There are even a few tracks on here from their split with Sockeye! Totally tardcore ,with weird vocals strewn about ,and change-ups on the musical styles occur frequently. One of the best things you may ever get the chance to hear! Be glad you were born with ears , unless you were'nt. And it's music like this that makes me feel sorry for those born deaf. Man, I need more of this!!

SONIC YOUTH - Live in Central Park , July 4,1992

A well-recorded boot ,missing one song (Expressway To Yr. Skull) from the show , recorded on the "Dirty" tour. I think Joel gave me this ,plus a cassette comp boot ,and another disc ,the exact location of which eludes me at the current time. Thanks, buddy!

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS - Blue Lightnin'

A swell comp of some of the finest blues ,from a real bluesman. "Wig Wearin' Woman" is my pick hit on this ,although I can't argue with "Morning Blues" and "Fishing Clothes" ,and the rest follows suit. Cool ,daddy-o!

JACK BONE

My cousin Robert ,former drummer of NJ psych-kings ,The Secret Syde , drummed for this alt-rock band in the late 90's. Sorta kinda like a cross of Johnny Thunders and The Replacements , if they were raised on beach rock. It certainly will never attain the status of Secret Syde ,but is good ,nevertheless. Once I watched Rob pour some milk into his bowl of spaghetti and sauce when we were younger.

The 3rd release from this band. More songs about food ,inspired by the recipe file ,in a plastic index box, which was stuck to Joel's carpet,a result of setting stuff back too early, after a carpet cleaning. Also tunes about the C+C Music Factory, classmates who kill, outer space ,and other subjects.Far-out shit, boyyyeeee! Recorded on 9/17/1991 ,20 years ago!

BLACK NERD - Acoustic Backyard Jam

This is exactly what the title implies. Chipmonk was sadly missing from this tape. Billy and Shane ,play guitars ,Sean Burch/Monson plays bongos ,and some guitar and vocals. Recorded live on 4/5/1992 in Sean's backyard.Definitely cult , and there was a fanzine (the cover of which is reproduced above!) ,of unknown origin , that was printed in a ltd. edition of 13 copies(!), dedicated to this band ,posted  over at my other blog  . There is also a great live at the Draft House recording ,located elsewhere on this blog. This must have been fun for the participants ,as it is fun to listen to. Do an eight-niner ,and sink into this atmospheric set of tunes.

ONE FELL SWOOP - Wired And Under Air

The loveable alt-rock/college -rock band ,back with their 2nd release ,from 9/14/1991. Their first bonafide hit ,and later a staple of their live gigs ,"Not Shiny Paint" is on here! It was later covered by one of Chipmonk's friend's bands in New Hampshire , Headband ,who supposedly were to cut a 7" with the song on it! I don't know if that ever happened ,if so , I want a copy! A lot more vocals than on the first album , and more humor. The finale ,"Now I'm Going To Kill You" , features one of the wildest guitar freak-outs ever commited to cassette tape ,played by Chipmonk ,a master on the axe. Hopefully you have by now grown used to our weird diy drum kit ,and it's not annoying you enough to turn you off to hearing some of the finest alternative/indie rock ,to ever come out of the FTM ,or anywhere else for that matter. We were on a Sonic Youth/Pavement/Dinosaur Jr./Big Star/(fill in the blanks) ,bender ,and we aimed to ape our idols. And I think we did a damn fine job ,as you will continue to see and hear ,as this series of tapes rolls out.

GG ALLIN - POTCAST DOCUMENTARY

This is an audio documentary of moments in GG Allin's life. It is related to the listener thru his music , and in the words of fans, friends, family and GG himself , as well as news clips ,and talk-show audio. An entertaining listen ,to say the least ,put together by Cut And Paste productions ,one of their many Potcasts or Potcastumentaries ,as is the case here. Really ,really ,cool and since we just passed the man's birthday (Aug 29th?) it's a fitting tribute to listen to.

LOPPYBOGYMI - Alternative Mixes

This disc has no info,no track list, nothing! I don't know these guys good enough to know the titles to these songs, but I can say this is less metal ,more hip-hop ,than the disc posted below this. A weird ,trippy bunch of tunes ,with ,like the other disc ,stange and neat-o samples before the songs. No info was available about this on the web.Just check it out,it's rare!

LOPPYBOGYMI - Unreleased Studio

From what I can gather ,this band was started in 1988 by Gregory Slay , James Orr ,and Tim Ramenofsky ,in Mobile ,Alabama ,but eventually settled in Nashville ,Tennessee. They play a jazz/metal/funk/hip-hop amalgamation ,which is quite trippy , at times. This disc (and the one posted above this) , were found while thrifting ,and there is no info about either of these on the web! Gregory Slay left the band in 1994 (about a year after Loppy's (as they are sometimes referred to) first album was released) , to form the band Remy Zero , who wrote the theme song to the TV show ,Smallville , "Save Me" ,and toured with Radiohead. Slay also earned an Emmy nomination for outstanding main title theme music in 2004 , for his composition of the Nip/Tuck theme song.He also played in the bands Sleepwell , Horsethief Beats ,and O+S ,as well as working with other artists. He died Jan 1 ,2010 ,at age 40,following a lifetime battle with cystic fibrosis. This stuff is great!!

MURDER 1 - Break These Chains / Interview on WSOU

This band consists of 4 New Jersey , guido, meatheads ,with dumb names ,sounding as if Skid Row went punk. The interview consists mostly of talk about porn and it's stars. These guys are real meatballs. Their publishing company is Goombah Music , so you tell me! Fuckin' dweebs!! Nice back cover ,tho'!

WINTER GARDEN - Summer's End

This was mastered at Morrisound Studios in Tampa ,by Jim Morris ,once the #1 studio and producer of Death Metal ,across the globe. It was recorded in Hudson , the next town south of me ,and I believe this band once(still?) lives there. If you enjoy the melancholy strains of Amy Lee fronting Evanescence ,or maybe Tori Amos ,you will like this. Alt-rock ,goth stylings ,and a Dali painting in the insert. Upon further investigation ,I found the singer of this duo (husband/wife or brother/sister?) had released a new album ,which appears from the cover art to be around the same perimeter as Sheryl Crow ,and her ilk. And I found some stuff which points to the fact that these folks are christian musicians. Maybe this is slightly before that period of their lives ,in 1997. Not bad for what it is.

NOISECORE COMPILATION!! SUBMISSIONS WANTED!!

My friend over at Laser Grind Trading Co.( http://www.lasergrind.blogspot.com/ ) is putting together a noise core comp! So why not turn in some tracks ,and get on some comps?!! Thanks!

THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE!!

A radio show on BCB 106.6 FM ,in the U.K. ,recently wrote, (on their blog , Untitled Noise) , about the greatest record ever made, and a witty and entertaining review it is ,and played some selections from it on their radio show. There is also a link to download this record , the greatest record ever made , and you may be surprised at what you will find! Here's the link to the BCB page about the greatest record ever made:

ONE FELL SWOOP - The Whole Works

After the demise of the much-beloved Cat Machine (9/90 - 9/91) ,Ed ,Joel ,& Chipmonk started up this fine indie/college-rock band ,with much experimentation ,and exploration of underground punk stylings. I will document this band,in the same fashion as Cat Machine ,ie. post the tapes on the day they were recorded,20 years to the date! This is the amazing first release ,a mostly instrumental affair ,tho' vocals do appear on a few tracks. All their influences are covered in "one fell swoop" ,hence the band name. There is much to come, even though their run (9/91 - 3/92) was shorter than that of Cat Machine ,they played many live gigs, all of which will be posted to this series eventually. They broke the downtown Ft. Myers scene wide open by securing a string of gigs at The Draft House ,on Dean St. ,the first band to really play gigs downtown. And look at it now! Shitty cover-bands rule downtown FTM now,and I will not take credit for that shit! When we got the scene kickin' ,it was all diy /punk bands playing , and drawing a nice little crowd. As new venues opened ,more bands and kids ,started frequenting the downtown area. It was quite a fun time ,and I long for those days to return. But,alas ,we are older ,the scene has changed ,and nobody is really interested in that anymore. There is a supposed new noise scene beginning in FTM tho' ,spearheaded by Tree ,Whitey and others ,and old-timers like Sean Burch/Monson and Jamie Hake ,are also contributing to the scene. Most of the people I just mentioned ,along with Noisekillr and a bunch of other performers ,will be playing at Cafe Bohemia ,in St Pete. on 10/29/2011 ,the 4th Annual St Pete. Noise Fest! And Noisekillr and Tree are about to release a disc of their recent collaborations! But back to OFS , there are no hits on this tape, nothing that ended up on their set-lists ,but there is the spirit of their jamming ways. Just gettin' toasted ,and playing improv jams! You will also notice the strange drum sounds on some tracks. We did use drum machines ,but we also created a drum kit ,exclusively built for useage on OFS recordings. It consisted of an empty type writer case , and a deep-dish pizza pan ,inset into a snare drum rim. Which we played with a hammer and pliers ,as "sticks". A unique sound ,which no other band had, plus we used guitars ,keyboards ,and a variety of "found" objects ,which would become "instruments" , in our diy/indie rock world of sound. Live we used a "real" drumset ,and 2 guitars (no bass) ,sometimes keys. It was a whirlwind life for OFS , who should have achieved alt-rock fame , but it was not to be. Chipmonk went off to form The Apples(In Stereo) ,who became media darlings ,after they kicked him out ,and then they wrote a song for the Cartoon Network series ,"The Power Puff Girls". Joel and Ed ,formed even more off-shoots from the Cat Machine/OFS axis ,as well as solo efforts galore. This series of their recordings will continue thru March of 2012. Collect them all! As with Cat Machine ,there will be a tribute disc for OFS ,after the series has run it's course! This music will open people's eyes and ears to the magic that was One Fell Swoop!! It would be cool if Joel and Chipmonk and others who saw us live ,left some anecdotes and comments in the box below! Recorded 9/10/1991 ,20 yrs ago ,yesterday!

North Carolina's own Kaagootaabaa, is back with yet another release ,this time trippin' effects pedals and different instrumentation, other than his usual electric guitar ,which is also featured. This artist keeps pushing the boundaries of diy/indie rock ,further and deeper into the underground . Plus he is the first person to submit a Cat Machine cover song for the upcoming Cat Machine tribute disc! (he did the song "Paul Kline" ,in a minimalist fashion!)

CAT MACHINE - Norma Jean's Dead

A practice for a gig at Norma Jean's that never materialized . Crazy Mary is interuppted by another nosy neighbor, and Golden Earring gets covered.Recorde at Ren and Stimpy's apartment on 9/2/1991 ,20 years ago today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ATTENTION!!ATTENTION!!

LIKE A GIRL , I WANT YOU TO KEEP COMING

A comp of bands and spoken word from John Giorno's Poetry Systems imprint, along with Rough Trade. There is some weirdness here , and some rockin'. Karen Finley does it for me,and New Order's cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" is great. John Giorno whines and wheezes in his usual voice ,and Uncle Bill (Burroughs) ,waxes poetic. Most of this is good.

LA GRANDE STORIA DEL ROCK - BIRTH OF THE BEATLES

The first side of this tape was recorded in 1961 in Hamburg with Pete Best ,Tony Sheridan, and The Beat Brothers. There is one Harrison/Lennon composition ,the rest are covers of then popular American rock n roll songs. Side B is live in Hamburg in 1962 ,has lots of speed-riddled chatter between songs, and covers more American rock tunes. Some of the vocals remind me of Elvis.

THE DOUGHBOYS - Shine e.p.

Shine was their only hit. The other 2 tracks here are far better, with their signature Husker Du sound. I saw these guys back in the day with All at the Cameo Theatre ,a fine ,now sadly defunct , Miami Beach punk club , and they were quite astounding.Better than this.Canada,ugh.

BYRON LEE & THE DRAGONAIRES - Dance The Ska

From the year I was born ,1964 ,comes one of my favorite ska albums of all time, hands down! Byron and the boys played the World's Fair in '64 also, and tried to introduce the new music known as "ska" ,to American audiences. One of the earliest practitioners of the genre, which was still in it's infancy when this was recorded. An album for the ages, every self-respecting ska band should be covering songs from this disc. If you haven't heard this, you'll never know what you've been missing! Grade A+ ska ,to the max! Thanks to Ralph at Record Trader!

JOHNNY SOCKO - Bovaquarium

Another lower-rung ska band ,this time from Indiana. Some stupid lyrics, that may make you laugh a little. The music is not really up to par with most 3rd wave ska bands. A few skits provide relief ,albeit briefly , from their tunes.

REGATTA 69 - Skattered Smothered Covered

A mediocre ska band from North Carolina ,with a slew of covers and compilation tracks, collected on this disc ,for your convenience. Bob Marley and Squeeze are both covered a few times,Poison ,Scram ,and Justin Hinds are also covered ,as well as a track from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Along with a few originals and live cuts ,this may be their finest work.
